Very few things have I thought about so hard in my life.
Back in 2017 when I was starting my business, I felt paralyzed by one big problem: What would my business name be?
I probably mulled it over for about a month before I settled on the name Eliza Hope Calligraphy. It seemed to fit what I was going for, and it was available on Instagram, so that's what I stuck with.
However, I never really loved it.
It seemed too much about me. And the truth is, I do more than just calligraphy! But, I kept the name because nothing else came to mind.
Then one evening I was hanging out with my best friend (who happens to be my sister) and we were talking about my business and how I felt like I needed a new name. The word "flourish" had been stuck in my mind that week, because the Lord was showing me that I wasn't really flourishing in any area of my life. I was feeling stuck and drained from my stressful job. So I told my sister that I wanted my business name to have the word flourish in it.
"How about "Flourishing Hope Designs"? she said. Immediately I knew that was the name. We did a quick search to make sure that name wasn't already being used by another account, and it was available! (Side note: my sister will never let me forget that she came up with the name.)
I think the thing that I like most about this new name is that it still has the word Hope in it. Hope is my middle name, and I believe the most important thing in the world is the hope that we have in Christ. I wanted my name to reflect that.
And finally, changing the word "calligraphy" to "designs" was a big decision, but it better describes my services. Yes, I do mainly calligraphy, but I have expanded to doing more design work and watercolor painting, and my name needs to reflect that.
So there you have it. I was nervous to make the change, because I feared it would confuse people and they wouldn't be able to find me. But I think that it is totally worth it, to have a name that is perfect for my business!
